Bekah Walton arrived at Repton on a transformational bursary placement from local school, John Port in Etwall. At Repton, Bekah was able to balance her academic studies in core STEM subjects whilst also maintaining her intense sport schedule, benefitting from the extensive facilities and resources available on campus Bekah was overjoyed when she received the news that she had been offered a place at Repton School Sixth Form. Arriving on day one, Bekah remembers;
“It was so different to my experience of what school was. It was so much more of a community”.
The boarding environment meant that Bekah was able to immerse herself fully into school life, allowing her to balance her A Levels with her Javelin training, resulting in her success as British Javelin Champion this year.
From Repton, Bekah secured a place at Loughborough University where she is currently a third year Mechanical Engineering Student.
“STEM is an area which is typically under-represented by women. We know that women now account for just over 10% of engineering professionals and despite this figure growing year-on-year, much more needs to be done to promote STEM subjects within schools and at University to encourage woman to move forwards in these roles”.
Beka’s role as STEM ambassador has been beneficial to our current pupils, who take part in careers and industry talks as part of our careers and mentoring programme at Repton.
